The AI-First SEO Playbook for 2026

Search is now answer-first. Here is the workflow I use to keep brands visible across Google, AI Overviews and LLM answer engines.

Classic SEO assumed a user scanning ten blue links. In 2026 a large share of queries end inside an AI-generated answer, which means the winning page is the one a model can quote confidently.

I start every engagement with an entity audit: what does the web already associate with this brand, and which of those associations are wrong or missing? Fixing entity clarity — consistent naming, schema, authoritative citations — moves the needle faster than another 1,500-word blog post.

Next comes question coverage. I mine search consoles, sales calls and support tickets for the exact phrasing customers use, then build compact answer blocks that sit near the top of the relevant page. Models reward directness.

Finally, measurement. Rankings still matter, but I also track how often the brand is named inside AI Overviews and assistant answers for priority prompts. That signal usually moves weeks before organic traffic does.

  • Structured data is the cheapest visibility win left
  • Track brand mentions inside AI answers as a ranking proxy
